SAFE SHELTER SUSTAINERS

Together, we will sustain safety for survivors.

From Crisis to Sustainability

Why Safe Shelter Sustainers Were Created

In August 2026, Safe Shelter shared that rapid losses in government funding and individual donations—combined with operating-cost increases of as much as 25%—had placed the organization at risk of near-term closure. At the same time, twice as many people were staying in the shelter compared with the same period the year before.

Our community responded with extraordinary generosity. Individuals, businesses, foundations, and community partners stepped forward, giving Safe Shelter critical time to stabilize and protect essential services.

Safe Shelter also took difficult internal steps to reduce expenses, reallocate grant funding, create new revenue, and position the organization for a stronger future. But stabilization is only the beginning.

Emergency fundraising cannot become our ongoing strategy.

That is why we created the Safe Shelter Sustainers: a community of individuals, businesses, leaders, and professional partners committed to helping Safe Shelter move from short-term crisis response to long-term strength.

Working alongside Safe Shelter’s Board of Directors and Leadership Team, Sustainers will help:

  • Diversify revenue

  • Strengthen philanthropic and corporate partnerships

  • Increase long-term community investment

  • Build financial reserves

  • Expand awareness and advocacy

  • Contribute expertise, relationships, and new ideas

The community’s immediate response helped keep Safe Shelter’s doors open. The Sustainers will help ensure those doors remain open for generations to come.

Together, We Sustain Safety.

Sustaining a safer
community takes
all of us.

For nearly five decades, Safe Shelter has answered calls, opened doors, and helped survivors find safety, support, and a path forward.

Safe Shelter can lead this work in our community, but we cannot do it alone.

Safe Shelter Sustainers are community members who contribute their voices, relationships, expertise, time, or financial support to help ensure these essential services remain available for years to come.

Signing up starts a conversation with the Leadership Team and Board of Directors at Safe Shelter.

What is a Safe
Shelter Sustainer?

A Safe Shelter Sustainer is someone who believes every person deserves to live with safety, dignity, and respect—and is willing to help strengthen the community response to domestic violence.

There is no single way to participate. Sustainers may:

  • Introduce Safe Shelter to people and organizations in their networks.

  • Help raise awareness in the community.

  • Support fundraising campaigns and events.

Why Sustainers Matter
