Volunteer Training
Volunteer training is mandatory for
all perspective volunteers. The training consists of two parts
interactive classroom training and hands-on training. Classroom
training (approximately 22 hours) covers domestic violence, interpersonal
skills and what we expect of our volunteers. Further training in the
specific area in which the volunteer will be working is required to
gain a stronger understanding. Hands-on training which takes 4
8 hours, is a time when the volunteer works in her or his position with
supportive supervision.
Topics covered in the classroom training
are:
Welcome to Safe Shelter
Expectations of Safe Shelter Volunteers
Communication Listening and Interpersonal Skills
Domestic Violence 101
Safety Planning
Introduction to the Shelter
Police Intervention / Legal Advocacy
Resources and Housing
Children
