Volunteer Opportunities

Safe Shelter of St. Vrain Valley could not operate without the generous support of volunteers. But in addition to helping Safe Shelter clients, volunteers gain as much as they give. The intangible returns from service to others are what draw our volunteers to us. Volunteer positions include:

Shelter Support Volunteer: This position involves work with the women and children who are being housed at our Shelter. Shelter volunteers provide basic education, safety planning, and support to the women and children and are needed to answer the crisis line. Volunteers are welcome to come between the hours of 10:00am – 8:30pm every day of the week. Volunteers need to be prepared for an unstructured atmosphere unless they are dedicated to creating a specific program for the women or children. Bilingual persons are especially encouraged to join our team! We need help at the following times:

Sunday 7:00 – 8:00pm: Be a mentor and play with the kids while the moms are in their weekly house meeting.

Monday 6:45 – 8:15pm: Volunteers assist and support women and children in their respective weekly meetings. Discussions revolve around self esteem, self care, domestic violence, boundaries and red flags.

Tuesday 7:00 – 8:00pm: Assist with an interactive play group between mothers and children every other Tuesday. There may be some evenings when volunteers play with the children and provide good role modeling while mothers are in group.

Children’s Support, Outreach: Children’s Support Volunteers empower and educate children who are receiving services or whose mothers are receiving services at Outreach in either 1:1 or group settings. May include being with children while the mothers are in group or individual counseling sessions.

Administrative Support: This position involves answering phones, taking crisis calls, scheduling appointments, greeting clients, filing, data entry and mailings. We specifically need assistance on Thursdays from 3:00 – 5:00pm.

Crisis Line Coverage: We need help answering the Crisis Line between 8:00am – 6:00pm Monday – Friday. Combine this activity with Administrative or Shelter support.

Court Advocate: The “Court Watch” program gives volunteers the responsibility of attending court on Tuesday afternoons (sometimes on Wednesdays) to support victims of domestic violence in court and to track trends in permanent protection order hearings. Bilingual support specifically needed all day on Wednesday and Thursday as well as Friday mornings. Generally 7 days notice is given to fill bilingual support for permanent protection order hearings. On-call Bilingual advocates are always appreciated for temporary protection orders.

Transitional Housing Support: Volunteers will assist with case management and participate on the Transitional Housing Review Committee. Time commitment is approximately 3 hours/week.

Friendship Truck: The Friendship Truck comes to Safe Shelter’s Outreach Center once a month on a Wednesday evening to give out food and clothing to our clients. The volunteer will be in charge of meeting and greeting the truck and monitoring the needs and safety of our clients.

Newsletter Volunteer: Volunteers will assist in the layout and creating of our newsletter. This position may work from home.

*If you have a special skill that you feel could assist our clients in becoming more self-sufficient, please contact us and share your ideas! We encourage people of all genders, ethnicities, religious views, and sexual orientations to apply.
