Helping Victims of Domestic Violence
Domestic violence, a pattern of physical,
emotional and/or sexual abuse used by one intimate partner to
obtain and maintain power and control over the other, is the leading
cause of injury to women in the United States (C. Everett Koop
1998). Domestic violence crosses all ethnic, religious, and educational
and socio economic lines with a single common characteristic:
85% of the victims are women (Bureau of Justice Statistics, 1999).
Domestic violence occurs with our mothers, sisters, daughters,
employees, friends and neighbors. Children in homes where domestic
violence occurs are profoundly affected emotionally and psychologically
by witnessing the violence and are at high risk of physical abuse
themselves.
Safe Shelter of St. Vrain Valley provides
a comprehensive system of programs and services to address the
needs of victims of domestic violence.
Our services include:
24-hour crisis line
Emergency shelter
Individual and group counseling for women and children
Case management (including transitional housing programs)
Information and referral
Legal advocacy
Community and school education
All services are available in both
English and Spanish.
